When I attended the 2021 United States Grand Prix in Austin, I was equally happy and frustrated by the experience. This was my first post-Drive to Survive Grand Prix, and I was surprised to see how busy and well-attended it was compared to years past, seeing more women than ever before! What left me feeling frustrated was being constantly invalidated while I was there – From the moment I stepped off the plane until the moment I returned home, I had to constantly “prove” myself as a fan. Surely, as a woman, I was only there because the drivers are so good looking, not because I enjoyed the racing, competition, and all of the things that make motorsport so thrilling on screen and in person. Overall, it felt like women being interested in vrooms was seen as a vanity based interest and felt more amplified than ever before. So, I decided to make a TikTok account in hopes of creating a motorsport fan community where ALL fans – old, new, he’s, she’s, and they’s – would feel welcomed and empowered to celebrate the greatest sport in the world. I don’t think it matters why or how someone is a fan of something, so long as they are being respectful, and I felt there needed to be a space where being a fan – for any or all reason – was accepted. The goal of SheLovesVrooms has always been to create a wickedly fun, hilariously sassy, ridiculously intelligent, and powerfully badass community where people feel comfortable being themselves, having opinions, and meeting besties all around the world for the sake of a shared passion of motorsport.
